Exit 11 and Other Stories: Growing Up in the Shadow of the New Jersey Turnpike
This 55 minute CD offers three stories that capture life growing up in an Italian Catholic family in the industrial world of the Garden State. Two stories celebrate life after Catherine leaves New Jersey and goes out to make her way in the world.
Peopled by characters we all have in life, it celebrates the journey of self discovery, the importance of laughter and the moments that remain in memory forever.
The stories on the CD are filled with humor and exhibit Catherine's ability to connect the dots of human experience to create pictures that speak to your heart and soul regardless of where you live or grew up. Recently, the self-produced CD received the 2002 Storytelling World Honor award in the Adult Listeners category and was reviewed by Carl Sommers of the The New York Times.
Here's what people are saying about "Exit 11":
"This is a wonderful CD. I loved the stories of growing up. The detail and sense of honesty is a delight. Keep up the terrific work."
Jay O'Callahan, Storyteller
Marshfield, MA
"This is an especially important set of stories. The unspoken mythology has been that rich stories are based on personal material come only from small town or rural settings. Your stories go so far in correcting and re-balancing that faulty mythology. They help model the important reality that stories rotate around human interaction and dynamics and those relationships are not geographically limited, but truly universal."
Donald Davis, Storyteller
Ocracoke, NC
"These are five beautifully crafted first person tales, told simply and directly, of something pretty close to ordinary life. But for Catherine Conant, ordinary life is a gently absurdist comedy."
The Museletter, L.A.N.E.S. Journal
Somerville, MA
"'Everybody has to grow up somewhere…' and Catherine Conant has put together a collection of personal stories about growing up in New Jersey in the '50s and '60s. Her stories snap and bristle with wit. She's a master of deadpan satire. But this is an affectionate memoir, and the satire only nips your heels, it doesn't bite you on the ankle. Likewise, the affection never gets fuzzy or sentimental. Conant's tone is 'jersey' to the core no nonsense, to the point, hilarious one moment, poignant the next."
